Japanese Culture and Craftsmanship Through London’s Japanese Exhibitions

London continues to celebrate the beauty of Japanese culture through a series of remarkable exhibitions, showcasing the rich heritage, craftsmanship, and artistic traditions that inspire contemporary Japanese design.

Samurai: The Art and Spirit of Japan

Earlier this year, the British Museum presented the spectacular Samurai exhibition. Although we were unable to visit, it was widely regarded as one of the most impressive exhibitions dedicated to Japanese history and warrior culture.

Samurai armour, swords, kimono, and hakama reveal far more than military tradition. Many of the garments and accessories are decorated with traditional Japanese patterns, known as Dentou Monyou (伝統文様). These symbolic motifs have been passed down through generations and represent wishes for prosperity, longevity, protection, good fortune, and harmony with nature.

From flowing waves and elegant cranes to geometric hemp-leaf patterns and seasonal flowers, these timeless designs continue to influence Japanese textiles, kimono fabrics, and contemporary Japanese craftsmanship today. The same appreciation for meaningful design can be found in many handmade Japanese accessories and artisan bags. https://www.britishmuseum.org/exhibitions/samurai

Kyotographie at Japan House London

Currently on display at Japan House London is Kyotographie: Kawada Kikuji × Iwane Ai, featuring two of Japan’s most celebrated photographers.

Both artists have participated in Kyotographie, the internationally acclaimed photography festival held annually across Kyoto. Their work offers a fascinating perspective on Japanese society, memory, identity, and cultural heritage, while capturing the unique atmosphere and beauty of Japan through photography.

For anyone interested in Japanese art, culture, and contemporary creativity, this exhibition is well worth a visit. https://www.japanhouselondon.uk/whats-on/kyotographie-kawada-kikuji-x-iwane-ai/

Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk

One of the most memorable Japanese exhibitions ever held in London was Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

This extraordinary exhibition explored the evolution of the kimono from traditional Japanese dress to a global fashion icon. Featuring exquisite silk kimono, samurai attire, Kyoto textile craftsmanship, and designs inspired by leading international fashion houses, the exhibition demonstrated how Japanese aesthetics have influenced fashion around the world.

Visitors discovered the artistry behind traditional dyeing, weaving, embroidery, and textile production, as well as the enduring influence of Kyoto’s master artisans. The exhibition highlighted how Japanese craftsmanship continues to inspire contemporary luxury fashion, interior design, and accessories. https://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/kimono-kyoto-to-catwalk?srsltid=AfmBOorgBnRuKeyophulzhC00P4bId8SYmnrBRg5o-4m0Mf96S3CYV4b

Japanese Heritage and Contemporary Design

At Tomomi Yamamoto, we draw inspiration from the same traditions celebrated in these exhibitions. Traditional Japanese patterns, craftsmanship, kimono textiles, and centuries-old artisan techniques continue to influence our designs today.

By combining Japanese heritage with contemporary style, we aim to create unique handmade bags that reflect the beauty, symbolism, and craftsmanship of Japan for modern life.
